The Ambassador Francis K. Muthaura Foundation (AFKM Foundation) is proud to offer transformative Master’s and Ph.D. scholarships to bright, deserving Kenyan students enrolled in accredited universities within the Republic of Kenya. Established in 2014 by Ambassador Francis K. Muthaura, the Foundation continues to invest in the next generation of leaders, diplomats, and policy-makers who will shape the future of Kenya and the East African region.
Purpose of the Scholarship
The AFKM Foundation Scholarship is designed to:
- Advance academic excellence in critical areas of governance and leadership.
- Provide opportunities for underprivileged but outstanding students to access higher education.
- Nurture transformational leaders who are rooted in values of integrity, patriotism, and professionalism.
Each year, a new class of AFKM Scholars is selected based on academic merit, character, and commitment to national development.
Eligible Fields of Study
AFKM Scholarships are awarded to postgraduate students (Master’s and Ph.D.) pursuing studies in the following disciplines:
- International Law
- International Relations
- Diplomacy
- Regional Integration
- National Cohesion
- Leadership
Core Characteristics of an AFKM Scholar
The AFKM Foundation seeks to cultivate a generation of scholars who embody the values it upholds. Every AFKM Scholar is expected to demonstrate:
- Humility – Courteously respectful of others
- Caring – Compassionate and willing to uplift others
- Patriotism – Love and dedication to community and country
- Transparency & Integrity – Honesty and accountability in all dealings
- Self-Belief – Confidence in their ability to drive positive change in society
What the Scholarship Covers
The AFKM Foundation Scholarship provides financial support covering the following areas:
- Tuition Fees
- Book Allowance
- Supervision Fees
- Library Fees
- Examination Fees
- Thesis or Project Work Support
Master’s Program: Up to KSh 300,000, disbursed in two (2) instalments
Ph.D. Program: Up to KSh 600,000, disbursed in three (3) instalments
All disbursements are paid directly to the university.
Selection Process
The award and selection process is overseen by the AFKM Foundation Award and Funding Committee, which comprises:
- Members of the Board of Trustees
- The Foundation Secretariat
- Distinguished members of the academic community
Scholars are carefully selected through a transparent and competitive process based on academic performance, leadership potential, commitment to service, and alignment with AFKM’s values.
