Dr. Mrs. Gladys Kathure Mwiti and the rest of the family,

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, Dr Mwiti played a pivotal role in the creation of the Amb. Francis K Muthaura Foundation was launched in the year 2014.

Dr Mwiti was instrumental in the formation of the committee that raised funds to assist in legal defense financing and other related costs for Amb. Muthaura’s case, when he was named as one of the suspects in the ICC Kenya case following the disputed Presidential General Elections of 2007.

Amb. Muthaura was among the five (5) Kenyans who were falsely accused as senior political and Government officials bearing the greatest responsibility for the post-election crisis. The accusations came as a shock to all friends and colleagues in the Government who knew Amb. Muthaura in the Public Service.

The ICC case legal fees were extremely expensive for all the accused. Dr. Mwiti and other friends of Amb. Muthaura felt it was their responsibility to help Amb. Muthaura, whom they knew was innocent, to raise the defense fund, and assured Amb. Muthaura, that he will not walk alone, and through the initiative of Dr. Mwit,I, together with his other friends, initiated the process of raising the legal defense fund.

Dr Mwiti and his wife, Gladys, offered their office as a meeting place for the committee he was leading. Dr Mwiti, and Amb. Muthaura had a long history of friendship. The committee comprising family members, friends, and working colleagues who had known Amb. Muthaura’s impeccable career in many capitals of the world as a Top Diplomat and as Head of Public Service and Secretary to the Cabinet over four (4) Presidential Administrations raised substantial resources.

As his friends’ expectations, his case and those of other accused Kenyans were dropped at different stages due to a lack of evidence. At that time, not all the funds that had been contributed had been used. The committee, led by Chairman Dr Mwiti, resolved that since it was not easy to return the balances to those who had contributed to the fund, the funds should be utilized through a public project. Hence, the Amb. Francis K Muthaura Foundation was born to promote National cohesion and Unity, Integrity, Regional Integration, Good Governance, Leadership, Youth Empowerment, and related Research and Publications.
To this end, the Foundation, through collaboration and partnership with institutions such as the United Nations and Institutions of higher learning namely, the University of Nairobi, Kenyatta University, the Management University of Africa, Africa Nazarene University, Moi University, and the United States International University (USIU) have sponsored an increasing number of Master’s and Doctorate scholars in these areas.

Dr Mwiti served as the Chairman of the Foundation Board of Trustees, where he led with passion, great enthusiasm on all matters pertaining to the Foundation. The unfortunate demise of Dr Mwiti has left a huge gap in the Foundation programs he was very eager to expand.

In memory of Dr Mwiti, the Board of Trustees of the Foundation will continue implementing the strategy advocated by Dr. Mwiti for resource mobilization and growth of the Foundation activities. The last message of Chairman Dr. Mwiti to the Foundation Board of Trustees sent on Wednesday, 11th January 2023 at 8.24 p.m. is reproduced below;
“Warm New Year Greetings and Blessings to you all in 2023.
Let us plan 2023 for the highest results ever.
To realize this, let us plan it wisely by beginning it well, progressing in it well, and finishing it Great.
For this reason, let us have our first meeting in January. To this end. I wish to suggest we meet on Thursday, January 26th, 2023.
Our Program Organizer will deal with the details.
Please note my pledges in 2023.

1. I shall honor our Constitution, obey the laws of Kenya, and any specifications set for the growth and development of Kenya.
2. KEEP Time as much as possible in all my engagements. Begin meetings in Time and finish as scheduled.
3. Avoid procrastinating as much as possible, procrastinating any activity.

Expect this of me in 2023. Our First Agenda shall be: Planning 2023 together.

Finally, on behalf of the Foundation Board of Trustees, we convey our most sincere condolences to Dr. Gladys Mwiti, Family, and friends. We have lost a great statesman, a nationalist, Pan Africanist, and a promoter of Global peace, Co-operation, and love of Humanity. It will further, forever be remembered that Dr. Mwiti, as the chairman of a working committee, played a central role in the formulation of national values contained in Chapter Six of the National Constitution 2010.

May the almighty God rest him in eternal peace and bless his family.
